Tyler Andrew "6" Nelson
Brooklyn, NY, USA
Story:
When I was a child, my mother would always tell us, my siblings and I, "Once you leave this house, I can no longer protect you." It was from these teachings that I began to question just what it meant to be safe, or rather, what dictates a safe space to be as such. Shifting, even evolving, much like we do, I began to look at space, at our personal space, as something that could and is autonomous in its intentionality. Making these images from my family home, and regularly in my childhood bedroom, I often find that in documenting my own transitions, I'm in fact expanding upon and continuing both a family legacy and a creative one. Tending to personhood and leaning into the relational dynamics, I find the work and practice to exist as a sounding board of sorts, unpacking and removing internal traumas.
