Sihle Ntuli's Family Memory

Early 90's (unknown)

Story:
The portrait is of myself, my (fraternal) twin brother and uMamkhulu (my late aunt) taken in KwaMashu, South Africa. This photograph was taken in our backyard, near the washing line of the matrimonial home of my grandfather and grandmother.

I can vividly remember uMamkhulu humming a soulful tune with some wooden pegs clipped on the edge of her towel as she hung up wet clothes, while abashana bakhe (her nephews) sat close by.

To me this picture represents a tender moment with people that I love, in their most memorable iterations. I drew inspiration from this portrait while working on my poetry collection ‘Owele’, I used the photograph as a way to remember.
