Nyla Williams

Baton Rouge, Louisiana

Story: I am a memory worker; this title takes on many meanings. Sometimes I'm an archivist, sometimes a researcher, a genealogist, a historian, or just a listening ear. It is not by chance I found my passion and career in memory work, the stories of and from the women in this old photograph led me here. The smallest girl is my mother, to the far left is her oldest sister, to the right of my mother is her other sister, in the middle is my grandmother, and to the far right is my great-grandmother. This photo is more than a family portrait; it's a lineage of storytellers and culture-bearers. When I preserve a photograph, document a story, or piece together a fragmented history, I do so with them in mind. These women instilled in me a sense of pride in my history and an urgency to protect it. Whether I'm curating an exhibit, creating a resource, or teaching a group, I do so with reverence for the women who taught me to value the past as a living guide.
