Storytelling Campaigns

Behind every creative is a story shaped by the people, places, and moments that make us who we are. The Creative Legacy Project invited Black creatives to share a photo from their past, a snapshot of childhood, a treasured family moment, or a place of deep meaning, alongside a reflection on how that image continues to shape their creative work today.

This project is a collaboration between We The Diaspora and All Black Creatives. 

Kinfolk Connections is a storytelling series exploring how memory work, archives, and storytelling show up through art across the Black Diaspora. Born from a love of art, memory, and collective history, the series celebrates the threads that connect us—showing how artists and culture bearers transform ancestral memory into living works. Each conversation blends the past and present to reveal the beauty, resilience, and truth of our shared legacy.

The Reflections of Us is a joint storytelling campaign between We The Diaspora and The Good Mirrors Institute, inspired by Good Mirrors’ 2021 “Mirror Work” affirmation deck. We invited participants to choose an affirmation from the deck and pair it with an archival image of someone, whether a family member, community member, or historical figure, who embodied the spirit of those words. The result is a tapestry of personal and collective memory, where affirmations become portals into lived histories and images carry the weight of both legacy and hope. Here are some of the thoughtful, moving pairings that emerged from this collaboration.

We come from the stars. For the Black diaspora, astrology isn’t just a trend, it’s an ancestral inheritance. From ancient African civilizations to the Underground Railroad, our ancestors looked to the skies for navigation, spiritual guidance, and revolutionary action.

It is not unbelievable that they used the stars to chart paths to freedom. The Dogon mapped Sirius, Yoruba cosmology honored celestial deities, Nat Turner read the solar eclipse, and Harriet Tubman followed the North Star. Our connection to the cosmos is embedded in history, myth, and lived experience — intentional, ancestral, and liberatory.
