Story:
This collage is compiled of my family and my heritage. The collection takes you through the migration of my family from South Carolina to where I now live Baltimore, Maryland. I wanted to make this collage to memorialize our lineage so that my children have no doubts or questions about who they are. A lot of our history has been blurred and seemingly unclear. Which is why I burned/scuffed and buried the collage before scanning it. This collage begins to unpack my story. I included an image of me and my dad during my kindergarten graduation. He has always been there through my art journey. Now I will be one of the first college graduates in my family! Not only that but one of the first people in our family to go back to the Motherland during study abroad! While studying abroad I felt connections to the African masks, the people, the food, and the landscapes. I constantly drew parallels to my dad’s house and the family I grew up with. History is a constant cycle, I’m just connecting the dots. I am proud of our beginnings and my culture as a Baltimore native.
