Jamal Love’s Family Memories

1980s - 2020s

Story:
Back in the 1980s a group of young Black men from Waterbury, CT formed a frisbee team called the MOB short for Masters of the Bee. Little did they know the impact they would soon have on the game. Only one of the founding members was familiar with the game. The rest were traditionally football and basketball players. As soon as they got together up they all fell in love with the sport. The hard work was just starting as they had to teach themselves the basics of throwing. Traveling along the East Coast they played in 30+ tournaments battling predominantly white teams holding their own and gaining respect in those circles. The team played together for 5 years before their personal lives took over. 40 years later this team was recognized for their trailblazing efforts. In 2023 they were inducted into the Ultimate Frisbee Hall of Fame as the first all-black frisbee team. What makes this story even special is one of those young founding members was my dad. The photos here are of my family with my dad at the ceremony along with the other teammates. Some old photos of them playing and also the original logo.
