Chisara Amanze’s Family Memories
Story:
1. The lady in the pink dress was my mom when she graduated from college from the University of South Florida in 1974. She was the first person in our family to ever go to college, and she graduated from the University of South Florida Medical School four years later. This was a large accomplishment for a Haitian immigrant during this time period. She faced a lot of rejection and discrimination from the education system, and she paved her path without the help of a lot of the university educators. Instead it was her friends and formed community that helped get her through medical school.
2. In the late 1980s, when my grandma first came from Saint Thomas to the United States, she lived in Corona. This is her chilling in her first house. She wears a luscious blue suit that she bought from Saint Thomas. My grandmother has always been a very stylish woman. Today, she loves to brag about how her designer archival pieces were so much cheaper then. She has a closet full of archival jewels.
3. In 1975, my grandmother lived in Barbados for a couple of months (she is a world traveler). She just had my uncle Reggie, and here she is wearing her maternity top. She found it very stylish, so even after she had my uncle, she continued to wear it. Here she stood up on top of a building as someone captured a picture of her.
4. My grandmother is in a white suit here. A Caribbean designer who lived close to her made this suit for her for $450. This picture was taken in the early 90s. Here she is still in her house in Corona. She is prepared for a formal event like church (she does not really remember the exact event).
*For the photographers my family says they do not remember but it was more than likely a family member or family friend
